Apple Trailers issue

Question

Howdy!  For the past few months, I've had a problem with Apple Trailers playing the first few seconds, then pauding, slowly buffering for a few minutes then playing out the buffer almost immediately, and on and on until the trailer finishes (a long time when I get 5 or 10 seconds of trailer, then buffer for 2 minutes) or I get POed and skip the trailer.  Is this a problem with Apple Trailers itself, or some setting on my end I've fudged?

I love you,

Matt

Can you stream trailers normally without buffering on a different system on the same network as your HTPC?  If so, it could be a setting.  If I recall, there is an option where you can set the resolution of the trailers.  It's been a while since I've run trailers.  If streaming to another system causes the same issue, it could be that your ISP or local network is having an issue.  I doubt Apple is going to have bandwidth issues with their site.

I was dumb and hadn't even tried limiting it to 720p.  I've got plenty of bandwidth so 1080p shouldn't have been a problem, but I guess something somewhere was bottlenecking me.

Now if only I could find out where Ragnarok has gone.  Hope everything's ok with them.

Unfortunately not.  Now I just have mediahuman download trailers from youtube to a 'recent trailers' folder and tell cv to play 2 randoms from there.  I set up a script to delete everything in that folder to delete anything more than a month old every night.

I recently ran trailers and didn't have any problems.  I'm running CoreELEC on an Odriod C2 over wired connection.  I can check my settings tonight and we can compare.  @Ragnarok seems to be more active on the KODI forums than here recently.

I ran some more testing this evening and still have no problems with streaming trailers from apple, though I am still using 720p in my settings.

Maybe some logs would help?

this is true with other kodi users if we try to back read the thread, i think this has something to do with cinemavision itself. Would be appreciated if someone from the developers tell us the real reason why this is so

Just tying to help the best I can.  As I said before, I can't recreate your issue in my environment, on my equipment running 720p trailers from Apple.  I'll step back and let you wait for a developer to respond.

I just tested for the first time in more than a year, and everything over 720p stops and buffers every few seconds.  I actually now have gigabit fiber, so it's definitely not bandwidth on my end.  I still use my own solution.  I'm not too worried about it.  I'm glad there's new development going on after such a long break.

Incidentally, if you google 'apple trailers 1080p buffering' you'll see it's pretty much every platform with that problem, including Apple TV.  I don't think there's anything CV devs can do about it.  It's on Apple's side.  I think what I've got going on works better anyway--since I've gone 4k, I grab 4k trailers from youtube using mediahuman, and then I have a script that deletes them once they hit a certain age.  If you want details, I'm more than willing to share.

Hopefully with the new development, we can get more sources added, like maybe Trailer Addict that has a better range of qualities even down to 480p and up to 2K.

is there a way we can get CV to utilize trailers without needing youtube app to do it?

I have CV working well, not sure it's the latest on, (I got it from repository). Youtube app needs alot of work to get going these days. I also find it sometimes 'hangs' with a black screen or I get audio for about 5 secs + black screen then crashes out to my library. Most of the time it works fine though.

Saw someones suggestion to rip trailers to disk then have CV play a random one - I think I'll go down this route for now as im not overly bothered about having matched trailers to film genre.

Still a superb addon - bit of a retro nut I use the audio format bumpers from back in the day. where suited.

I'm not sure if there is a way to do it without the YouTube app currently. Maybe someone else knows better.
